Hematology
Today Belarus is a recognized leader among the CIS in the field of hematology. In terms of the number of hematopoietic cell transplantations per 10 million population, it is 3 times ahead of Russia, and more than 10 times ahead of Ukraine. Our Center is the only one in the Republic of Belarus who perform bone marrow transplantation for adults.
Diseases that were successfully treated with stem cells are:
- Acute leukemia;
- Diseases associated with the pathology of myeloid germ proliferation;
- Phagocytic dysfunctions;
- Hereditary metabolic disorders;
- Hereditary diseases of the immune system;
- Chronic leukemia;
- Diseases associated with the pathology of stem cells;
- Lymphoproliferative diseases;
- Histiocytic dysfunction;
- Hereditary anomalies of erythrocytes, other hereditary diseases.
Center for Hematology and Bone Marrow Transplantation includes the following departments and centers:
- 4 hematology departments (132 beds);
- department of bone marrow transplantation (7 beds);
- department of intensive care and resuscitation (12 beds);
- clinical diagnostic laboratory;
- department of oncohematology (laboratory of HLA-typing, cellular biotechnologies and bone marrow separation and cryopreservation);
- remote gamma therapy department;
- City Center for Transfusiology, National Registry of Bone Marrow and Stem Cell Donors and Republican Registry of Blood Diseases.
The Republican Center has a consultative and diagnostic office of a hematologist and a hematologist specializing in bone marrow transplantation.
The following medical care and services are also provided in the Center:
- carrying out the course immunosuppressive and polychemotherapy in standard and high doses for patients with oncological and hematological diseases;
- pre-transplant examination and treatment;
- operations upon collection of bone marrow transplant and peripheral blood stem cells;
- conducting high-dose chemotherapy and radiation therapy in the conditioning mode before transplantation;
- transplantation of hematopoietic cells: bone marrow and peripheral blood stem cells;
- conducting complex therapy during the pancytopenic period, due to the previous special treatment;
- preparation and long-term personal storage of umbilical cord blood.
The center performs auto- and allogeneic HSC transplantation. Today, the possibility of performing allogeneic (from an unrelated donor) transplantation is associated with the development of hematopoietic stem cell (HSC) donation.
Note that:
- less than 30% of patients requiring HSC transplantation have an compatible relative donor.
- donor selection is carried out according to the HLA system;
- the probability of finding an unrelated HSC donor lies within 1: 5000;
- for an effective search for 1 unrelated donor, it is necessary to have at least 50,000 typed potential donors;
- search and activation of donors in foreign registries costs from 15,000 to 20,000 Euros.

The hematological departments of the MSTH are traditionally leading in the treatment of diseases of the blood and bone marrow. We offer the latest and highest quality treatment for malignant blood diseases, including: acute and chronic leukemia, Hodgkin's lymphoma (lymphogranulomatosis) and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, aplastic anemia, multiple myeloma, etc. The latest diagnostic and treatment methods used by specialized hematology departments allow successful accurate blood and bone marrow examinations and effective treatment.
Hematologists have achieved particular success in the treatment of acute leukemia, the main methods of which are chemotherapy and radiotherapy, bone marrow transplantation.
